1763 - Dedication of the Touro Synagogue

  • On December 2nd, 1763, the Touro Synagogue was dedicated in Newport, Rhode Island

  • This synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the United States

  • It originally served the Jeshuat Israel congregation, made up of fifteen Jewish families from Spain and Portugal

1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte Crowns Himself French Emperor

  • On December 2nd, 1804, French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

  • The sacred ceremony, which occurred in the presence of Pope Pius VII, allowed Napoleon to establish the legitimacy of his reign over France.

  • While Pope Pius VII recited the official formula of coronation, Napoleon is said to have placed the crown on his own head, naming himself Emperor Napoleon I of France.

  • After crowning himself, Napoleon then crowned his wife, Joséphine, which is depicted in the painting above.

1970 - Operations by the United States Environmental Protection Agency Begin

  • In July 1970, President Richard Nixon proposed the establishment of an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Nixon signed an executive order on December 2, 1970.

  • The EPA is an independent executive agency of the U.S. government that manages environmental protection matters.

  • This agency has 27 laboratories and provides environmental assessments, research, and education.

  • The EPA’s responsibility is to enforce national environmental standards through many laws contributed by state, tribal, and local governments.

1971 - The United Arab Emirates is formed by Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai, and Umm al-Quwain

  • Prior to becoming known as the United Arab Emirates, they were the Trucial Sheikhdoms of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai and Umm al-Quwain

  • The Trucial Sheikhdoms were all protectorates of England

  • United Arab Emirates declared independence on December 2nd 1971, this was done by signing a Proclamation of Union

  • December 2nd and 3rd is currently a part of a two day holiday called, Al-Eid Al Watani which is an Independence Day.
