Culture is all around us -- in the books we read, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, and even the food we eat. Different cultures, some more similar to our own and some completely unfamiliar, influence us every day and in every aspect of our lives. Not only does culture encompass the collective qualities of a group of people, but it is also reflected in each individual person. Every person has their own distinctive qualities and values ingrained in their cultural identity. Even the details of our lives that we often take for granted, like our background, family, or neighborhood, help develop our individuality and set us apart from others within our cultural communities. Sharing everyone’s individual stories, rather than only letting one voice speak for an entire community, ensures that this individuality will be acknowledged.
The mission of The Diversity Story is to educate others by posting stories to create an inclusive, diverse, and receptive environment for all. We are here to encourage people of all cultures and generations to tell their unique stories, explain their struggles, and celebrate their successes in a place where they will be heard and appreciated. We seek to provide a safe place for everyone to express, listen, and accept, because we believe that, as humans, connecting with each other is our greatest strength.
Today, there is an overwhelming amount of hate and intolerance between groups with conflicting cultural ideas, mainly due to ignorance and lack of communication. Rather than condoning intolerance towards different cultures, it is important to understand the differences that contribute to that intolerance, as well as commemorate our similarities. Through presenting the stories and values of people from different backgrounds, we can build new connections between groups. The connections forged by the dissemination of often unheard stories and experiences, in turn, will allow us to combat cultural intolerance.
We at The Diversity Story aim to reach and gain insight from a global audience. We encourage people to express themselves in whatever form they feel best represents their message, whether that be through art, writing, film, photography, cooking, or other means. We invite creators from all different backgrounds and cultures to submit their stories to be published on The Diversity Story.
